Where to Stay in Madeira: The Best Areas for Every Style of Trip

Madeira is compact, but where you stay changes the trip considerably. Funchal gives you convenience and dining; the southwest gives you a slower coastal mood; the north puts nature first.

Funchal

Choose Funchal if you value walkable evenings, restaurant choice, better transport options and the widest hotel selection. It is the strongest base for a first trip and works particularly well if you do not want to drive every day.

Ponta do Sol

Ponta do Sol is smaller, more atmospheric and excellent for couples. It works beautifully if you want sea views and a slower pace, while still being positioned for west-island drives.

Calheta

Calheta offers a more relaxed resort rhythm and can be convenient for travellers who want pool time mixed with scenic days.

North Madeira

The north is for travellers who would choose waterfalls, forest and wild Atlantic landscapes over city convenience. It can be exceptionally memorable, but we would usually combine it with a car.

Our smart-value method

Compare the best room in your second-choice area with the entry-level room in your first-choice hotel. Often the better trip comes from choosing a slightly less famous location and upgrading the room, view or service level.
