A lakefront walk in Lucerne, a mountain railway, a clean design hotel and a terrace lunch can feel more premium than a very expensive room where you spend little time. Switzerland rewards travellers who buy access and location rather than labels.
Choose bases with transport leverage
A well-connected base can eliminate car costs, parking stress and dead travel time. Zurich, Lucerne and many alpine gateways make rail-based travel unusually practical.
When to upgrade
- Upgrade the room if the view is genuinely part of the experience

Should you rent a car?
